The Basics

The Mount Dora Pairs Challenge Ladder runs from October 1, 2008 through December 15, 2008. It is a great way for newer bowlers to become acquainted with tournament-style lawn bowling. More experienced bowlers can use it to sharpen their skills and focus on strategy.

To Make a Challenge
When you are ready to make a challenge, go to the rankings page (you must be logged in first). Then click on the team you wish to challenge and follow the instructions. The ladder rules are below.

Responding to a Challenge
When a team receives a challenge the skip should respond to the challenger with three suggested dates for the match. The suggested dates must be on different days, but within 10 days of the date of the challenge. If the challenging team cannot bowl on any of those dates, then the challenge is void and the challenging team should cancel the challenge.

If a challenged team cannot suggest three dates due to the absence of a team member (or some other extenuating circumstance), then the challenged team may notify the challenging team and request that the challenge be cancelled. If the challenged team does not provide three suggested dates, then the match is forfeited to the challenging team.

Cancelling a Challenge
If the challenging team wishes to cancel the challenge, they may do so within the challenge and grace period with no consequences.

Substitutes
Substitutes are not allowed. Teams are allowed to change members by notifying the administrator, but the former member may not later rejoin the team.

If You Will be Away
If you wish to take a break from the ladder (e.g. you are away for a period of time) then you can do so by clicking on 'take a break' from the admin page (you need to be logged in to access this page).

IMPORTANT! Be aware that if a team "takes a break" from the ladder, then rejoins afterwards, that team will be placed at the bottom of the rankings. It may be advantageous to simply remain active on the ladder and forfeit any challenge that is issued during your "away" time because a forfeit drops you only one place.

Pairs Ladder Rules

General Rules

1. All Challenge Ladder games shall be 14 ends.

2. A team may challenge another team that is up to three positions above its position on the ladder.

3. A team may not challenge another team that is in a position below its own.

4. Games must be played within 10 days of a challenge being made (unless there are extenuating circumstances), otherwise the challenger wins.

5. Challenge Ladder games shall be scheduled at a time that is convenient for both teams. No ladder games shall be scheduled on Saturday Mornings.

6. If the team being challenged offers three different days to bowl the match and the challenger cannot agree to any of them, then the CHALLENGE is VOID.

7. If the team being challenged cannot offer three different days to bowl the match, then the CHALLENGER WINS by default.

8. If either team is more than 15 minutes late in arriving for an agreed game, then the late or non-attending team loses/forfeits the game.

9. When a team makes a successful challenge, that team will move up to the position held by the losing team prior to the game. The losing team will drop one position, staying above the teams that were below it prior to the game that was lost.

10. When a team makes an unsuccessful challenge, no change in positions occurs for any teams on the ladder.

11. Teams should wear whites or team uniforms when bowling ladder games.

12. If no result has been recorded by the end of seven days after the challenge was made, a reminder is emailed to both parties.

13. If no result has been recorded by the end of the 10-day challenge period, a warning is sent to record the result within three days (grace period).

14. If no result has been recorded by the end of the grace period the challenger automatically wins.

15. If the challenging team wishes to cancel the challenge, they may do so within the challenge and grace period with no consequences.

16. If the challenged team (challengee) wishes to forfeit the challenge they can record this within the challenge and grace period and the game is won by the challenger by forfeit.

17. Ties - If a game is tied after 14 ends, one additional end will be played to determine the winner. Only one point will be awarded in the additional end.

Mount Dora Lawn Bowling Club Pairs Ladder

This site is running squash ladder PHP - a web / browser based application to automate the process of running our Challenge Ladder. Challenges are made online and the challenger and challengee receive emails to notify them by when they need to play the game. Reminders are sent to challenger and challengee if the game is unplayed, and if no result is recorded by three days after the game was scheduled to be played it is considered a forfeit and the challenger wins!

New rating system
You will have noticed a points score appear next to player names on the rankings page (if logged in). This is a trial points rating system based on the classic Elo system. Players will be awarded points for winning and lose points for losing depending on how difficult the system calculates your opponent to be. It will take a few games to settle down the scoring system. Currently the rating is displayed for information purposes only but in future it will be possible to arrange the ladder ranking system around this points score.
